TOE JAM MONDAYS: real toe tappin’ jams – Volume 1
What Toe Jam Mondays is all about:
Like most people I definitely have a strong sense of what I like; but if a song is good, it’s good. It doesn’t matter if it’s been done before or if it’s something you’ve never heard. Look at Elvis, he didn’t invent rock ‘n’ roll, he just brought it to us white folks and changed music as we know it. So I don’t want to shove my musical critiques down your throat, or tell you what is too hot to handle right now, I just figure there is so much amazing music that we’re all bound to miss some gems. These posts won’t be dedicated to one genre or one generation, hopefully it’s just a place to hear some good tunes, put a smile on your face, and a tap in your toe. Come back every Monday to see a new post.
I thought I would start this Monday with a band that is sure to wake you up and prepare you to grab this week by the cahones. Whether that week consists of recuperating from a rager, sitting at a desk job or starting the hunt for that perfect summer job that lets you start at 10am, this band will make you happy to do it.
J Roddy Walston and the Business put out their first LP in 2007, but I didn’t stumble upon them until they put out their self-titled EP (now called Don’t Break the Needle) earlier this year. I loved how badly this band made me want to pound on anything I could find. I don’t play the drums, but I was busting out all kinds of John Bonham moves.
After pulling myself together, I was on the hunt to find out more. I bought their first album Hail Mega Boys off iTunes and found some YouTube clips that confirmed to me that these guys would be one of my tops. J Roddy pounds the piano like it slept with his sister and as one critic put it he makes James Brown look lazy.
J Roddy and The Business’ new album is out now and you can get the song Brave Man’s Death for free form their website just subscribe to their newsletter in the bottom right corner. http://jroddywalstonandthebusiness.com/
